刺猬在夜间活动，以昆虫和蠕虫为主要食物，小刺猬一晚上能吃掉200克的虫子，消灭害虫因此有利于农业。和豪猪不同，刺猬的刺不能脱落。也因为行动缓慢，有时会被高速行驶的车辗死。刺猬的主要天敌是貂、猫头鹰和狐狸等食肉动物。
