大西洋之役是英國的生存根本之戰。從１９３９年到１９４２年， 希特勒的潛艇 -他稱其為“灰狼”- 藉著圍剿阻止船隻從北美洲運輸食物、原料、部隊與他們的裝備到英國，威脅迫使英國屈服。到了１９４２年， 數目不多的德國潛艇已使英國瀕臨戰敗邊緣 -多達三萬多個商船船員喪生。同盟國只有在擄獲德國密碼機並發明雷達之後， 得以開始發動反擊。大西洋“鹹水公路”控制權之爭的形勢因此逆轉，85%以上的德國潛艇官兵將會喪失性命。首次透过德军潜艇官兵亲口描述英德两国大西洋控制权之争夺战。
